Ocala took its name from the historical village of Ocale or Ocali, which was populated by the Timucua Native Americans of Northern and Central Florida. The village is mentioned as early as 1539 by Spanish explorers; however, the modern city of Ocala was not established until 1846.

Throughout the 20th century, Ocala grew to become one of the most recognized thoroughbred horse capitals in the world. It is one of only five such cities in the world allowed to use this title. Modern-day Ocala is located in Florida's Marion County, and is home to nearly 60,000 people.
